Microwave Michelson and Fabry-Perot interferometers are respectively considered as
instances of: (1) A “reflection system”, consisting of a radiating-receiving system and a
reflecting object (e.g., a finite mirror) ; and (2) a “transmission system”, consisting of a
radiating system and a receiving system with an object (e.g., a Fabry-Perot etalon) inter-
posed. The basic theoretical objective is the calculation of the amplitude and phase of the
(time-harmonic) received signal in the systems considered. The electromagnetic field in
space transmission paths is represented in terms of continuous angular spectra of vectorial
plane waves, and the elements of the systems are described by means of suitable tensor
scattering matrices (having both discrete and continuous indices). Needed scattering
matrices are considered known; relationships to experimentally determinable data are
outlined. The general case of either the reflection or transmission system is soluble 1 formally
in terms of a series of integrals stemming from the Liouville- Neumann series solution of
certain integral equations. Formulas are obtained for models of the Michelson and Fabry-
Perot instruments with arbitrary radiating and receiving characteristics. The theory and
various features of the instruments considered, including Fresnel-region (or quasi-optical)
behavior, are illustrated by means of examples obtained by choosing relatively simple and
rather hypothetical analytical expressions for the radiating and receiving characteristics.

Birefringence: The phenomenon in terms of polarization, understanding light as a wave with field components in transverse polarizations (perpendicular to the direction of the wave vector).
A crystal with its optic axis in this orientation, parallel to the optical surface, may be used to create a waveplate, in which there is no distortion of the image but an intentional modification of the state of polarization of the incident wave.
For instance, a quarter-wave plate is commonly used to create circular polarization from a linearly polarized source.
Similarly, light modulators modulate the intensity of light through electrically induced birefringence of polarized light followed by a polarizer.
Birefringence can be observed in amyloid plaques such as are found in the brains of Alzheimer’s patients when stained with a dye such as Congo Red.
In ophthalmology, scanning laser polarimetry utilises the birefringence of the optic nerve fibre layer to indirectly quantify its thickness,
The study of birefringence in shear waves traveling through the solid earth is widely used in seismology. Birefringence is widely used in mineralogy to identify rocks, minerals, and gemstones.
Birefringence results when a material’s permittivity is not describable using a scalar value, but requires a tensor to relate the electric displacement (D) with the electric field (E). Continue reading →

To engineer the mind and its operations directly, one must perform electrodynamic engineering in the time domain, not in the 3-space EM energy density domain.

The direct engineering of time-like mind and mind operations—in all levels and all aspects—requires the use of time-polarized photons and time-polarized EM waves.

This is the rarest form of electrodynamics, almost untouched by Western physicists. One can either painfully produce such time-polarized photons and EM waves and directly irradiate a target mass with specific assemblies of them, or one can force the mass itself to iteratively transduce ordinary transverse EM waves first into longitudinally-polarized EM waves and then into time-polarized EM waves.
